More winds of change in West Indies Cricket
CWI directors have voted to not renew the contracts of selectors Roger Harper and Miles Bascombe, Machel Hewitt explores further...
When Johnny Grave announced post T20 World Cup that the contracts of the selection panel were being extended until the end of year whilst the selection review task force completed their analysis, it led to predictable uproar in the Caribbean.
A sketchy latter half of 2021 had seen the West indies lose to South Africa in a Test Series and despite drawing 1-1 at home to Pakistan, the World Cup Squad selected followed by the awful World Cup performance had the knives drawn for the selectors.
As is wont in West Indies cricket, someone had to be a scapegoat and when enough ire had been exhausted towards the departing senior players (Gayle, Rampaul etc). It turned full throttle towards the selectors.
Yet nothing is ever as straightforward as the ‘cuss-out’ culture in West Indies cricket demands. In context based on the record since the panel was appointed in 2019 there is enough evidence to suggest things have marginally improved but who wants to hear context when a WC campaign has ended in failure?
I took to the Caribbean Cricket Podcast You Tube channel to explore the issue further and analyse both the pros and cons of the decision.
Have a watch and let me know you thoughts and ultimately as I make clear - lets have accountability but to expect anything meaningful to change with cosmetic amendments is foolhardy at best.
