TKR stay alive in Women CPL after Super Over win
TRINBAGO KNIGHT Riders stayed alive in the 2024 Massy-sponsored Women Caribbean Premier League (CPL) after a Super Over win over Guyana Amazon Warriors on Sunday night, at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba, Trinidad.
The Knight Riders registered their first win of the tournament; a loss would have all but eliminated them from a spot in the final on Thursday (August 29).
The 2023 champions Barbados Royals lead the standings with four points from two games, followed by the Amazon Warriors and Knight Riders, who have each played three matches and have two points apiece. However, the Amazon Warriors have a net run-rate of 0.327, compared to the Knight Riders' -0.752.
Sent in to bat first on Sunday, the Knight Riders posted 128 runs for the loss of eight wickets with captain Deandra Dottin leading the way with 53 (38 balls, six fours and three sixes) while Shikha Pandey contributed 25 (24 balls, two fours and a six). Left-arm spinner Chloe Tyron took two wickets for 12 runs for the Amazon Warriors, while off-spinner Karishma Ramharack had 2/19 and pacer Shabnim Ismail 2/24.
In response, the Amazon Warriors posted 128/5 with Erin Burns hitting 61 (50 balls, six fours) and Shemaine Campbell 25 (29 balls, one four). Pacer Jannillea Glasgow (1/18), left-arm spinner Zaida James (1/24) and off-spinner Samara Ramnath (1/26) were the wicket-takers for the Knight Riders.
In the Super Over phase, TKR made 19 without loss, courtesy of Dottin's 13 (four balls, two sixes) and Jemimah Rodrigues' six (two balls, one four).
On a spin-friendly wicket, Ismail was given the honours to bowl the Super Over by her captain Lauren Winfield-Hill and, in reply, pacer Pandey was handed the responsibility of defending that total. In the end, Pandey came up trumps, as the Amazon Warriors were restricted to 5/2.
The Royals will square off against the Amazon Warriors on Monday evening. All matches in this tournament are being contested at Tarouba.
